“Massage doesn’t just feel good. Research shows it reduces the heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases blood circulation and lymph flow, relaxes muscles, improves range of motion, and increases endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers.” ©1999 American Massage Therapy Association

I offer several different techniques within a session. I almost always offer full body massage unless otherwise determined for various health reasons. A full body massage is essentially massaging the entire body except for the genitals or breasts. Many therapists leave parts of the body out such as the buttocks, face, scalp chest or abdomen. However, the effects of a full body massage will last much longer than a partial massage due to the entire system (and the meridians) being worked on.
Here are my favorite modalities:
Shiatsu is a powerful healing modality originally from Japan. Ideally, it is done with the client clothed in comfortable clothes lying on a comfortable floor mat. Practically however, a massage table is often sufficient. Oils are not used and the practitioner may use their hands, thumbs, elbows or knees. Sometimes, shiatsu is referred to as acupressure or meridian style, as some of the techniques used incorporate areas of the body which are also within the acupuncture meridian system.
Deep tissue massage releases the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contacted areas, either following or going across the grain of muscles, tendons and fascia. It focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. Some people say deep tissue is more of a technique than an established modality.
Swedish is the most common type of massage. Specific strokes and pressure are used to release a dysfunctional holding pattern. It includes long strokes, kneading and friction techniques on the more superficial layers of the muscles, combined with active and passive movements of the joints. This therapy promotes general relaxation, improves blood circulation and range of motion, and relieves muscle tension
Sports. A sports massage uses many of the same techniques as Swedish massage, except that the person is dressed and no oil or lotion is used. It is not a strictly defined modality.
